Charis
Mother and Baby Care is a transitional project for vulnerable
pregnant women. Each of eight residents are provided with
individual living units and an additional shared living
room, kitchen and laundry facility. There is a lift between
floors.
The
residents are accommodated throughout pregnancy and childbirth,
during which, there is often a joint working programme
between the resident, staff and the Health Visitors.
There
is a rear private garden, which combines a childrens
play and picnic area. The safety of the building is maintained
by a security camera.
Charis
Mother and Baby Care provides a comprehensive support
programme for its residents and is a joint project
with Granta Housing Association in Cambridge.
Many
of the women are young and all are vulnerable. For some,
there is a real risk that without the necessary parenting
skills, their new baby could be placed in the care of
the Local Authority.
The
task of the staff is to enable the women to bond with
their babies and to develop the parenting and independent
living skills needed to provide a safe and healthy living
environment for the future.
